Not many people have dainty big toes (unless you’re under, say…3 months old). Angular, serviceable, black and blue, calloused, but not dainty. But that’s OK-- they get the job done. Without them, how would we keep our balance? What would we stub if the front-line stubbee wasn’t there (all the other little guys, I guess).
Thumbs, too, get some abuse. When was the last time you heard someone say, “Why, I’m all ring fingers… what a klutz I am!”? But, have you ever tried to tie a kid’s shoe lace without them? And what would a hammer do without its faithful thumb there to hit?
Ears come in many sizes, but they, too, become infected, require drops, get pierced, turn unbecoming reddish shades, have all manner of smallish items extricated from them, and stick out at the most embarrassing angles. Yet we depend on them to hear everything from the breathiest whisper to the most exasperated bellow.
Good news for these lowly appendages: Exodus 29-- but specifically, verse 20. (I know, the last time you anointed your toe was for that ingrown nail, right?) But, what a thought to take a cue from these Old Testament verses, and specifically consecrate these parts of our body as they symbolize our obedience (21:6), work, and service for the Lord.
